11/16/09:
I was asked about how to transplant an odometer from a cluster with a flakey speedometer into a good cluster from a donor car.
It is actually quite easy: (you will need to do this to both clusters to swap odometers.)
1. Remove the cluster from the car.
2. Remove the 8 Torx screws that hold the clear cover off of the cluster, and remove the cluster.
3. Remove the single Torx screw at the bottom of the speedometer/tachometer unit.
4. Unplug the two side minor gauge pairs from the cluster and put them aside.
5. Unplug the speedometer/tachometer pair from the center of the cluster.
6. Flip the speedometer/tachometer pair upside down on top of the cluster so the unit is not resting on the needles. You can now identify the three 5mm screws that hold the cluster and you can see the cable that runs from the speedometer to the odometer motor. Since someone had remeoved the odometer motor from this cluster, the motor and cable are missing from my pictures.
7.Note how the odometer cable is plugged into the speedometer so you can reconnect it the same way after the swap. Unhook the odometer cable at the speedometer printed circuit board and remove the 3 5mm screws. The odometer will come right out.
Here is the odometer removed from the Speedometer/Tachometer unit:
Here is the fromt view of the odometer:
8. Swap the odometers, replace the 3 screws and connect the odometer motor cable in the same way you took it off.
9. Flip the speedometer/tachometer unit over and plug it back into the cluster. Plug the minor gauge pairs back into the cluster. Put the single Torx screw that holds the speedometer/tachometer unit in place.
10. Put the clear cover back onto the cluster and replace the 8 Torx screws.
11. Reinstall the cluster in the car, and you are done.
